SHELBURNE WOMAN BECOMES UNITED WAY DIRECTOR OF FINANCE and OPERATIONS; Susan Pelkey Smith Joins the United Way Staff
January 25, 2010 (South Burlington, VT) The Executive Director of United Way of Chittenden County recently announced the appointment of Susan Pelkey Smith of Shelburne to the position of Director of Finance and Operations for the organization. Having most recently spent five years as a supervisor in the small business department at the Burlington-based CPA firm, Gallagher, Flynn and Company, Pelkey Smith comes to United Way with a strong background in financial management and accounting, both in the nonprofit and for-profit sectors. She spent twelve years as the Director of Finance at the Burlington YMCA and before that, was an audit and accounting manager for JMM and Associates.
According to Gretchen Morse, the Executive Director of United Way of Chittenden County, “Susan was the natural and perfect choice to fill the vacant position. She spent six years on our Board of Directors, and most recently retired at the Treasurer of the Board and chair of the Operations Committee. We are thrilled to have her leadership and expertise now as part of the leadership team.” Roger Monette, the former Director of Finance and Operations left the organization in November to assume the position as Comptroller of Vermont Energy Efficiency Corporation.

January 11, 2010 (Burlington, VT): As announced Friday, January 8th by the sponsoring partners, the annual Burlington Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration will feature guest speaker, Anita Hill. Hill, known for her 1991 sexual harassment charges against Clarence Thomas on the eve of his Supreme Court Justice confirmation. Her compelling testimony before the U. S. Senate Judiciary Committee was broadcast live around the globe, sweeping her from the obscurity of her life as a professor of Law at the University of Oklahoma.
Hill is currently a Professor of Social Policy, Law and Women’s Studies at Brandeis University and received her law degree from Yale University. Due to popular demand for the free tickets, the event had been moved to the Unitarian Universalist Church on Pearl Street in downtown Burlington and is still scheduled for Sunday, January 17th at 3 p.m. As previously reported, the event will also feature the critically acclaimed Abundant Life Choir from Montreal. The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required and available at Fletcher Free Library, Peace and Justice Center and Burlington City Market.
